Why Do We Care About Misinformation
When we say that misinformation is an issue, I often think that there are a heap of normative assumptions placed into that. We think that there is a truth, and this is most commonly the dominant populist truth. We think that if we all just had access to the ‘good’ information, we would have a better functioning democracy. Should we ever try to suppress information in the name of democracy? Or is that a slippery slope? When does misinformation blur into opinion? When truth changes, what happens to the old ‘misinformation’? What happens to the conspiracy peddlers when the conspiracy is real?
